Learning To Trust God In The Storms

Our storms come in all sizes, shapes and packages. They come in the form of a diagnosis of a serious illness, concerns over having enough money to take care of our families, broken relationships, unmanageable pain, job loss, diminishing mobility, wayward children, loss of a loved one, loneliness, feelings of rejection, or unwanted change, etc.

Nature’s storms also come in all sizes, shapes and packages. They can be huge and violent or small and annoying. They can last for minutes, hours or even days. Nature’s storms have a variety of names such as, Hurricane, Tropical, Tornado, Typhoon, Tsunami, Cyclone, Blizzard, Thunder and Lightning, Snow, Ice, or Hail. These storms can greatly disrupt our lives and plans. When we are in the middle of a storm, it is often difficult to see beyond the dark clouds, howling winds, heavy rains or huge waves. Fear can creep in and quickly disarm us.

Jesus and the 12 disciples faced many storms together. One storm in particular found in the book of Luke tells us about the day Jesus invited the 12 to go across the lake with Him after a long, grueling day of ministry. They all got in the rugged fishing boat and headed five miles across to the other side of the lake, As they set sail, Jesus fell asleep in the back of the boat. He must have been exhausted from the activities of the day. Shortly afterward, it began to rain. A squall came down on the lake and the boat was rocking back and forth, quickly filling the boat with water. The Disciples became more frightened by the minute. They ran to the back to where Jesus was sleeping, shouting, “Master, Master, this storm is out of control, and if you don’t do something we are going to drown. Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and raging waters. The storm immediately died down and all became calm again. Jesus then turned to the Disciples and asked, “Where is your faith?” In total amazement they asked one another, “Who is this: that commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him.”
